The Importance of Youth Activism

“We are living in times that will demand courage. When people ask me how do I draw hope, how do I stay encouraged, how do I continue to show up? The answer is that I look back. I look back and I look at how my existence here today is owed entirely to the courage of people who came before me. And so, what do I owe myself in that moment and to those who come after me? To exercise courage in this moment.” – Bree Newsome Bass

Throughout history, young people have been at the forefront of social change, challenging injustice and demanding a better future. Today, youth activism is more visible and necessary than ever. From climate justice to gender equality, young activists worldwide are proving that age is no barrier to making a difference. With the rise of social media, young people now have greater access to unfiltered news and a powerful platform to amplify their voices—spreading awareness, mobilising movements, and holding leaders accountable.

However, activism can seem daunting. It’s easy to feel powerless in the face of global issues, but activism isn’t just about large-scale protests or making headlines—it’s about using whatever resources you have to contribute to change. Whether it’s attending a march, signing petitions, supporting grassroots organisations, or simply educating yourself and those around you, every action counts.

The Power of Youth Activism

Some of the most influential activists in recent history have been young people. Greta Thunberg started as a lone protester outside the Swedish Parliament, calling for urgent climate action. Her efforts sparked a global movement, with millions of young people striking for climate justice. Similarly, Malala Yousafzai became a symbol of gender equality after advocating for girls’ education despite threats from the Taliban. Her activism led to the creation of the Malala Fund, which continues to fight for the right of girls worldwide to receive an education.

Another powerful voice in youth activism is Nupol Kiazolu, a civil rights leader and former president of the Youth Coalition for Black Lives Matter. She has been advocating for racial justice from a young age, organising protests, speaking at rallies, and leading grassroots movements to fight against systemic racism and police brutality. Through her activism, she has emphasised the importance of youth leadership in shaping a more just and equitable future. Nupol’s work demonstrates that activism isn’t just about reacting to injustice—it’s about creating lasting change and ensuring that marginalised voices are heard.

What makes youth activism so powerful is its fearless perspective—young people often challenge outdated norms and institutions that older generations have become accustomed to. They often aren’t led by hidden agendas or feel like they have to filter what they say for the sake of their careers, or their bosses. While adults may feel bound by established systems, young activists push boundaries, ask difficult questions, and demand change. Their fresh outlook and refusal to accept "the way things are" drive forward movements that might otherwise stagnate.

Activism Beyond Social Media

With the rise of social media, activism has become more accessible than ever. However, activism isn’t just about being loud online. While spreading awareness is crucial, real change often happens through action behind the scenes. Volunteering, organizing community events, donating to causes, and reaching out to policymakers are just as impactful. Some of the most effective activism happens quietly—writing emails to representatives, supporting marginalised voices, or even making sustainable lifestyle choices.

You Can Make a Difference

It’s easy to feel like individual actions don’t matter, but activism is about collective effort. History has shown time and time again that change doesn’t happen overnight, but small actions add up. If you’re passionate about an issue, start by educating yourself, finding like-minded communities, and taking small steps toward making a difference.

Environmental activist Enya Fang writes:

  • “Ask yourself why. Why do you care, who is it for, and what do you hope to gain?

  • Find people with common interests as you and work from there.

  • Keep learning and exploring new topics.

  • Think about where you want to be and write down all the steps it will take to get there. Activism is neither a static journey nor a solitary one. Be realistic, ambitious, and above all, genuine in your goals.”

And most importantly—don’t just sit back and assume someone else will fix things. You have a voice, and the power to create change starts with you. Whether you choose to advocate loudly or work behind the scenes, your efforts matter. Youth activism has shaped the world before, and it will continue to shape the future. The question is: What role will you play?
